Lent 2023, Week 5: Persistence

Lent 2023 persistence

Live as children of light,
for light produces every kind of goodness
and righteousness and truth.” (Ephesians 5: 8-9)

This week kicks off with Laetare Sunday: it is the halfway point of the Sundays of Lent, a day of rejoicing ("laetare" means "rejoice"). The Mass celebrant may choose to wear rose-colored vestments rather than the somber purple of Lent.

It is a respite in this penitential season -- a reminder that although we may feel surrounded by darkness, the light is drawing near, that although we are beset by challenges, we can always turn to the Lord for comfort.

This week we focus on persistently following our Lenten practices -- but let us also focus on finding joy in the effort. The very name of this Lenten Sunday commands us: Rejoice!
